Conor McGregor in ‘big-money’ talks for WWE job

Conor McGregor is in talks to make a one-off special appearance with the WWE, The Sun can exclusively reveal.

The UFC lightweight champion is taking time off after losing his enriching pro boxing debut to Floyd Mayweather in August. However, The Sun has learned that the Dublin bruiser is in talks to get back into the ring for a megabucks wrestling match against one of the WWE’s biggest stars.

McGregor, 29, is a long-time fan of wrestling and has even adopted WWE promoter Vince McMahon’s infamous “billionaire strut” when he enters the UFC octagon.

The Sun understands that a deal is close with WWE top brass but the match is likely to be delayed until next year — with a possibility of him appearing in April’s Wrestlemania.

“Conor is a huge wrestling fan. His entire persona on stage he has developed from watching performers like Ric Flair and The Rock,” a source said. “These are the top dogs at self-promotion and trash talk. He watched these guys when he was younger.

“This is something he’s always wanted to do.The WWE guys have asked him to do shows before with them but the timing was never really right. But this time it looks like a deal is going to be locked into place. He has some things to tie up in the UFC before he can do anything else but this is a big money deal so I can’t see him turning it down.”

Last week, WWE chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon said: “I think Conor would be a perfect fit for WWE.”

“He certainly has the personality, the athletic ability, the appeal. He speaks his mind, he is very genuine and authentic and he has a hell of a Vince McMahon swagger.”

In February of this year, McGregor revealed that the WWE had been chasing him to appear in the ring but he turned them down as he was lining up the Mayweather fight.

“Never say never. I’d love to go into that WWE and have a real knock,” he said recently. Let one of them have a real knock and see what’s what. But we’ll see. There’s conversations ongoing. I’ve turned down some things, the conversation’s still ongoing.”

McGregor wouldn’t be the first UFC star to cash in on an appearance in the wrestling world with former bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey making a memorable debut alongside The Rock in a match against Triple H and Stephanie at “Wrestlemania 31” in 2015.

Dad-of-one McGregor’s appearance in the wrestling ring could rub some WWE stars the wrong way after he called them all “messed up p—–s” during the promotion for his UFC 202 fight against Nate Diaz.

Afterwards some WWE stars including Ric Flair called McGregor out on social media for his remarks.
