Goldie Hawn is unpredictable. On her first trip to Las Vegas in 1966, she picked up a hitchhiker. On her first date with Kurt Russell, she broke into her newly purchased home (to which she did not yet have keys), and they got busted by the police. And her daughter, Kate Hudson, told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday, she also once crashed her teenagers’ house party.
“We thought our parents were of out town,” Hudson said of her and older brother Oliver’s plan to throw a party. “All of a sudden, the door swings open, and it’s my mother.”
Well, that doesn’t sound good. But if it’s the 1990s and Goldie Hawn is your mom, this seemingly predictable story has a few twists. Hudson said that she and her brother grew up in a very “open-door” household with parents who liked to party. But, technically, they had not asked for permission to host this particular shindig. As Hawn appeared at the door, the room grew tense.
“Everything just stopped. She was in a negligee, and she looked around as you think she would in one of her films,” Hudson said, imitating her mom’s famous squinty-eyed, pensive look.
In this moment, Hawn didn’t reprimand the partying teens. She didn’t yell or even raise her voice. According to Hudson, again imitating her mom in the perfect whisper, Hawn reached for the lights and dimmed them. “She goes, ‘Kids, lighting is everything.’ And then she left.”
Hudson said her friends were impressed, but she and her brother knew they were in for it the next day. For that one night, Goldie Hawn—in a negligee—was the coolest mom in Hollywood.
