Late-night comedians can’t get enough of the tension between President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. On Tuesday night, the bulk of them piled on POTUS for claiming his IQ is higher than Tillerson’s.
Here’s the background: Last week, Tillerson denied reports he called the president a “moron,” but Trump was not convinced his secretary of state was innocent. “I think it’s fake news,” Trump told Forbes magazine, “but if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.”
Trump then told reporters Tuesday during a press briefing that his intentions were not to undercut Tillerson. “I didn’t undercut anybody,” he said. “I don’t believe in undercutting people.”
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders then assured reporters in a later press briefing that POTUS was just “joking” when he insinuated he was smarter than Tillerson.
‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’
Colbert told his audience he obtained the results of their IQ tests.
“Tillerson scored a 120. It’s above average, not genius but still pretty good. And we have Donald Trump’s results right here: It’s a drawing of a big truck that says MAGA,” Colbert joked, complete with a crayon illustration of Trump driving a truck blowing exhaust on “Rex Smellerson.”
‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’
“White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders today said that President Trump’s comment that he had a higher IQ than Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was ‘a joke’ and told reporters they should ‘get a sense of humor,” the NBC late-night host said.
“They should get a sense of humor? You’re the one who always looks like she just found a joint in her son’s Bible,” he joked.
‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’
“Let’s face it. When a grown man challenges another grown man to a head-to-head IQ test, we don’t really need to see the results of that IQ test,” Corden said. “They’re both idiots.”
“This is the saddest thing about this,” Corden added. “The president is supposed to be proud of having people around who are smarter than he is. It doesn’t inspire confidence if the president is like, ‘Geez, I gotta tell you, my cabinet is bunch of dumbasses.'”
‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’
Kimmel segued from talking about his daughter’s Halloween costume in his monologue to Trump by saying, “Meanwhile, in other toddler new.”
“No intelligent person would get into an IQ contest with his own secretary of state,” Kimmel said. “At this point, I don’t think Donald Trump could finish a maze on the back of a Denny’s kids menu.”
“I’d pay $100 to watch Rex Tillerson and Donald Trump take IQ tests against each other,” he added. “And I guaruntee you the next day Kellyanne Conway would be on TV explaining that IQ tests are like golf — the lower the number, the better the score.”
