We are still processing, as you are presumably, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s joint appearance Monday, at the Invictus Games in Toronto, where the couple arrived to watch a wheelchair tennis match holding hands, and then sat together in the stands, “whispering and laughing” throughout the event. (This came two days after Markle attended the opening ceremony, where she sat several sections over from Harry in the audience.)
While there is a lot to break down about the photographs of the pair—and the British press will no doubt still be finding new angles on them months from now—royal watchers immediately honed in on Markle’s choice in attire. Yes, there were the jeans with the rip in them (made by “high-end denim brand Mother,” costing roughly $238) and the low-key bag (“the Italian leather Day Market Tote,” made by Everlane, which sells for $165).
But Markle’s loose white shirt is what is garnering the most attention. The item of clothing was designed by Misha Nonoo, who is actually friends with Markle (Nonoo was also married to one of Harry’s friends from school, Alexander Gilkes). Most intriguingly, the shirt, which costs $185, is also called “The Husband.” Particularly amusing is the Daily Mail’s take on this name as “perhaps a subtle indication by Meghan that she won’t be a single lady for much longer,” as if she had been looking through Powerpoint slides the day before the event, trying to pick the shirt that would send just the right number of clues to the press. (Her glasses were made by British brand Finlay & Co, a line Pippa Middleton and Zara Tindall are also both fans of—and her tan Sarah Flint flats are actually the most expensive part of her outfit, costing $495.)
What does it all mean? Was Markle trying to send a message with the “Husband” shirt, aware of the way every outfit the Duchess of Cambridge wears is picked apart immediately? Given that we have never been cognizant of the name of a shirt we have worn, did she even know it was called the “Husband” shirt?! And, most essentially, now that you know all the components of Markle’s look, has it crossed your mind that this could be an excellent (though expensive) Halloween costume?
