There’s more to successful celebrity endorsements than a signature on a dotted line, as Coach x Selena Gomez proves. This fitting collaboration on a collection of limited-edition bags and leather accessories has been borne out of a special bond between singer-cum-actress Gomez and Coach’s British creative director Stuart Vevers.

“The relationship I’ve created with Stuart is very special,” 25-year-old Gomez says of this partnership. “We really bonded from the beginning – we spoke for weeks and weeks before we decided to do something together.”

As the most-followed person on Instagram, and with a career that has taken her from Hollywood – her role in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers is not-to-be-missed – to the top of the music charts, what Gomez does gets noticed. So, naturally, she’s particular with what she invests her energy in.

“It’s really great to have an influence and some control when you’re working with a brand. Having control in a situation is something that’s important to me, as a woman and as a businessperson. What Coach represents as a brand is something I can embody.” Her creatively connected relationship with Vevers has resulted in designs that are made for the modern woman – functional, without sacrificing style.

“The woman I design for is authentic, honest and possesses a romantic charm mixed with a cool attitude. Selena embodies all of these qualities perfectly, but the fact that she has always loved Coach, and believed so strongly in our philanthropic mission, made her a true Coach girl,” he enthuses. “We discovered Selena is a carryall girl. She wanted something streamlined, smart, but not too formal, with clean lines, important hardware. Something she could use that could go with anything.” The Selena Grace bag is the result.

In a year that has seen millennial pink become 2017’s most-buzzed about, it’s a savvy move to create the bespoke shade of “Selena Red” for the collection that includes wristlets, wallets and bag charms. Created from a point of prioritising what Gomez loves, the shade feels “very her”, as she explains: “Everyone has a colour that has some significance, that gives you an instant confidence boost. For me, red is both classic and has an edge. I definitely have noticed over the years I tend to wear red often.”

Gomez’s personal touches make this collection stand out, like her self-penned quote, “Love Yourself First”, embossed on the bottom of the Selena Grace bag. This contemporary collection is sure to not only appeal to Gomez’s avid fanbase, many of whom have been with her since her child-star days, but also to those looking to invest in a wardrobe classic to carry for years to come.
