Bachelor Nation has been calling this one for months, that the relationship between Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi was doomed and the supposed Season 21 lovebirds wouldn’t make it to the altar.
On Friday, the couple confirmed the inevitable by announcing they had broken up. In a joint statement to E! News, they explained their “heartbreak” at deciding to “end our engagement.”
“We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairy-tale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn’t been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other.”
But it’s possible the relationship was over a while ago. Even by the superficial standards of reality TV romance, the two always seemed to be a shaky ground, though they continued to put on a united show in public.
Back in June, Us Weekly reported that things were a different matter in private after Nick, 36, and Vanessa, 29, were spotted, looking “miserable” on board a plane to Los Angeles.
They were returning from what should have been a romantic getaway in Puerto, Vallarta, Mexico, but a witness told Us Weekly that they “didn’t exchange five words the entire flight.” They also sat angled away from each other, the witness said.
Things looked even more icy when they landed: Nick, considered to be something of a bad boy of reality TV, reportedly grabbed his bag and raced ahead of his fiancee.
Another sign of trouble? Vanessa, a special education teacher from Montreal, was seen around the same time, out and about in Los Angeles but without the 3.75-carat diamond ring that Nick had presented to her when he proposed in the “Bachelor” finale that aired in March.
Since the show’s finale, the couple reportedly dealt with lots of fights, jealousy, conflicts over where to live and the public, not surprisingly, questioning the authenticity of their engagement, Us Weekly said.
Shortly after Vanessa finished battling 29 other women to win Nick’s heart, she moved to Los Angeles, but Nick got super-busy being a contestant on Season 24 of “Dancing with the Stars.” Vanessa reportedly was jealous of the time he spent with professional partner Peta Murgatroyd.
Nick is a former software salesman who has made something of a career for himself being on reality TV shows. He previously appeared on Andi Dorfman’s season 10 of “The Bachelorette,” Kaitlyn Bristowe’s season 11 of “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise” season 3, where he hit it off with Jen Saviano.
Finally, as the star in “The Bachelor,” he chose Grimaldi over runner-up Raven Gates, and proposed to Grimaldi with that diamond ring.
But in the months since that moment, the two never seemed to be any hurry to make the union legal. To their credit, they have never claimed that everything was rosy between them.
“Vanessa and I have always been transparent about the realities of our relationship,” Nick told Us in April. “There are so many amazing things that we have in our relationship but there are also things that we continue to work towards.”
