Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi‘s split shouldn’t have come as a surprise. The Bachelor couple was never a good match. And Nick knew it. But he didn’t want to have yet another finale without getting engaged, according to insiders.
Nick and Vanessa announced their split on Friday just five months after their engagement aired on ABC. “It’s with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement,” they told E! News in a statement. “We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn’t been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other.”
Nick was previously dumped by Andi Dorfman and Kaitlyn Bristowe on The Bachelorette. Both splits were difficult for Nick, and he didn’t want to be that guy who walked away a third time without a fiancée. Neither did the producers.
It hasn’t escaped The Bachelor producers that ratings have been erratic the last few years. Neither Kaitlyn nor JoJo has started planning her wedding. And Ben Higgins recently announced a breakup.
It was easy to see that Nick adored Kaitlyn and Andi. It never seemed the same with Vanessa.
“Their friends knew the relationship wouldn’t last,” a source close to the couple told People. “It was a mismatch from the start. She’s super fun, bubbly and outgoing and he’s more of a serious personality and more introverted. She would try to bring him out of his shell, but he’s just not as comfortable in big groups.”
Indeed, there had been signs of problems between Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi. Who could forget their awkward interview on “After The Final Rose”? They also had been in no rush to plan their wedding.
The couple also famously had issues deciding where to live. Vanessa wanted to stay near her family in Canada, while Nick wanted to be in Los Angeles.
“Nick and Vanessa have wanted to end this for a while now but was trying to figure out the right timing,” a source told E! News. “They could never agree on where they wanted to live. Nick was never willing to move to Canada and that’s where Vanessa wanted to be permanently.”
They tried hard to make it work. They even dismissed previous breakup reports. But in the end they wanted very different things.
