Some of football’s biggest stars descended on London as Nike celebrated the 20th anniversary of their famous Mercurial football boot range and launched the latest editions.
Paris Saint-Germain talisman Neymar, Manchester United’s Alexis Sanchez and new Arsenal signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were among those in attendance at the launch party, which saw the unveiling of the all new Superfly 360 and the Vapor 360 boots.
The celebrated guests arrived in style to London’s Printworks venue in lavish McClaren sports cars that had the word ‘Mercurial’ emblazoned on the side before posing for photos and mingling with one another.
Legendary Brazilian striker Ronaldo, who popularised the original Mercurial football boots at the 1998 World Cup, was also prominent in the throng of the game’s most talented and recognisable players.
A number of Chelsea’s key men were present too, with Eden Hazard and Tiemoue Bakayoko taking the opportunity to share a selfie with Ronaldo, as well as their newest Premier League foe Aubameyang.
Another iconic figure, Cristiano Ronaldo, was also part of Nike’s roll-out, with the Real Madrid star taking to Instagram to promote the latest version.
“Twenty years of Mercurial, the most iconic boots on the planet,” the Portugal captain said as he admired the new design. “I’ve never seen something like that before.”
The latest offerings from Nike will be available to buy on February 14, which, whisper it, makes them a possible Valentine’s Day present.
The Mercurial Superfly 360 and Vapor 360 are the latest in a line of Nike’s range football boots that have been specifically designed to maximise a player’s speed and touch on the pitch.
Back in 1998, the Mercurial football boots first appeared on the feet of Brazil striker Ronaldo and it became one of the most sought-after pieces of equipment among those who played the game.
The idea behind the Mercurial boot was to take away the unnecessary weight in order to give fast players that little edge in the game.
The original featured a thinner plate and lighter design, as well as a sticky outer coating that was sourced from racing motorcycles.
Nike’s Mercurial boots – what’s new?
The designs that were unveiled at the launch party on Wednesday evening features Flyknit technology, which wraps the foot for a more comfortable fit and they come in a bright colour scheme of orange and black.
According to Nike, the design is focused on eliminating “unwanted movement” and the company’s All Conditions Control outer layer is actually embedded within the Flyknit.
On the underside of the boot, Nike have removed the soleplate in the Superfly 360 with the aim of improving traction and acceleration.
How much will the new Nike Mercurial boots cost?
There is no price for the boots as yet, but those who are considering buying them can sign up to be notified on the limited release.
If previous editions are any sort of indicator, however, the new boots could cost over £200.
