Taylor Swift’s New Album Has a Very Fitting Title

After two full days of teasing us with a (somewhat disturbing) serpent video, Taylor Swift’s album announcement is here. Early Wednesday afternoon, the singer made an Instagram post announcing Reputation, her newest album, coming on November 10. Her first single for the album, she also announced on Instagram, will be out tomorrow night.

Let’s see. Swift just released the image of a full snake on her Instagram—no doubt alluding to all those snake emojis that popped up on her social media in July 2016 following some drama between her and ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris. It all happened in what was a rough summer for the star, around the same time as the “Famous” drama with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. In the leaked phone calls released by Kim, Taylor acknowledged that she was on the verge of becoming overexposed—a direct acknowledgement of how aware she is of her own reputation as a star. Now, she announces an album called Reputation. Haters be warned, she seems to say.

This news follows a quiet year for Swift, during which she has appeared to lie low while recording her new music. Besides one performance at Houston’s Club Nomadic, she has not performed this year. On top of that, she didn’t show up to host the Rhode Island Taymerica celebration despite her fans’ hopes. But it seems we will hear more from her in the coming months as she no doubt teases the new album and this new Swift era.

When Swift dropped 1989, her last album, in October 2014, rumors regarding her long-standing beef with Katy Perry came with it. “Bad Blood” became the ultimate revenge single, and, just this spring, Perry released her response: “Swish Swish.” So far, the clues for Reputation are pointing to more lyrical revenge on Swift’s part.

Will she take more snake-like swipes at Perry? Or is she widening her range a bit to all who have wronged her in the past three years? We must wait until November to find out. Hopefully with fewer snake videos along the way.

At the 2013 Grammys, Swift gave us a return to full-on Grecian glamour in a pleated J. Mendel gown. It’s hard to believe that someone can look this flawless in the aftermath of a breakup—but we guess that’s why they write breakup songs, isn’t it? For all kinds of closure, except the type that gets in the way of a fierce, revealing dress.
