Ever since Meghan Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry was announced, we have heard more from Meghan’s half sister, Samantha Markle, than we have from basically anyone else connected to the couple. The former actress—who has the same father as Meghan, Thomas—is writing a book called The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister, which, we can only assume, is not particularly thrilling to Meghan. And Samantha also received a whirlwind of press after reacting to Prince Harry’s recent comments that Meghan now has the family she “never had” with the royals.
In a new interview with the Mirror, though, Samantha is aiming to clarify her position and her feelings about Meghan. For one thing, she wants everyone to know that, uh, her Princess Pushy book is not going to be an unflattering portrayal. You see, the title is a construct she is going to disprove through the book. “I wanted to show in the book that she [is the] opposite,” Samantha said, and the author claims she will be casting a light on the ridiculousness of “social perceptions and labels.”
Samantha, who currently lives in Florida, says the last time she spoke to Meghan was in 2014. “The last time we spoke—when I heard her voice—was 2014, almost 2015. Her last words were, ‘I love you, babe. I’m really glad we had this conversation. Keep in touch.’” But they have not been able to keep in touch: “And [Meghan] couldn’t—she got busy. I tried. But I think she just got really busy.” She goes on, “I hope now that she knows I was there. I should’ve really reached out more . . . but I’m proud of her.”
Samantha’s ongoing press tour may seem like it will only further aggravate Meghan, but Samantha is hoping that Meghan understands her true intentions. “I can only say to Meg, ‘Forgive me,’” she tells the Mirror. As for that royal wedding invite, Samantha is self-aware enough to realize the whole book thing . . . may not work in her favor on this front: “I don’t know . . . I don’t know if she’s going to feel that my book is good. There’s a lot of misperception out there . . . I’d be lying to say that I wouldn’t be hurt if I didn’t get an invite but that’s really up to her.”
Samantha has also tried to convince Meghan to financially support their father—who is reportedly keeping a very low profile in Rosarito Beach, Mexico. It sounds like, from Samantha’s account, some of these conversations added to the friction between Meghan and Samantha. “There was just a time when—and it’s funny—we were on the phone. It was probably not my place to say but I was just saying, ‘Hey, help Dad with some of that money for school now you’re making a lot of money.’ I think at that time she wasn’t that pleased about what I had to say.” When Samantha saw the dress Meghan wore for her engagement portraits with Harry, she commented, “If you can spend $75,000 on a dress, you can spend $75,000 on your dad.”
Meghan has yet to comment on Samantha or the book since she began dating Harry.
